Synchronizing Fireflies! A Bucket list worthy Experience.
The Magical Time
Every year thousands of people come to visit the Great Smoky Mountains. Whether it’s to ride the Wild Eagle for the 100th time or enjoy family time at the Apple Barn Village, everyone comes here to fulfill something on his or her bucket list.
Have you heard about the synchronizing fireflies?
The greatest magical moment in the Smokies happens around this time of the year. For almost a week or two (last week in May, first week in June), fireflies also known as lightening bugs come out in the national park and puts on the most incredible show in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Thousands of fireflies gather together and flash their lights in sync. Researchers say it is mating season. Flashing their lights is how they attract to one another. It is absolutely the most magical moment you will experience here in the Smokies.
Want to see the show?
The park organizes a trolley service from the Sugarland Visitors Center to the Elkmont viewing area (the best view to see the fireflies). Parking passes are required to be purchased. For more information on the pass and synchronizing fireflies please visit recreation.gov.
